Such a great interview with Stephanie!! Thank you, Jane!!
I especially loved learning about how horses can hear our heartbeats from four feet away and she gets to keep herself calm for Orion. Brought tears to my eyes, the power of an animal never ceases to amaze me! 💙💙
Thank you for this interview Jane. I’ve been wanting to read Stephanie for a while now! I remember when I saw the trailer for « Maid » I thought, looks great, but it’s too close to home. I won’t be watching it. Then 2 different friends in two different parts of the world sent me a long texts in which they said how it reminded them of my story and that I needed to watch it. So I had no choice but to watch it. It was very hard to watch, but I’m so glad I did. I’ve learned to forgive myself through it, which is a very big thing. I’ve been planning to read her books ever since, so I think this interview is another sign that I must :)
Oh, Imola, I understand this feeling well. For different reasons (health!),there are certain books and movies I've had to shy away from over the years.I think that sort of self-protection is often quite necessary. But sometimes when we let a little in, it can really help. And Stephanie is such a lovely, kind soul, passionate about helping others. I will actually be doing a long form interview with her in October!
Stephanie's Land's story (via the movie) affected me deeply. It gave me insight I didn't have before into how difficult it is for those so disadvantaged to get out and move up. I'm so glad my consciousness was expanded - thank you.
I love the story re: Orion! I am so happy that you intuited his need for new surroundings and took the time/effort to help him in that way. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
The thing that struck me from the interview most was the quick line about your parents reading your journal. That happened to me too. I was 13. I tossed it off at the time but I do think it’s something that wounded me in a way that I’m only now beginning to realize 40+ years later.
How old were you and was it something you ever addressed with them? Did you consider it a breach; does it linger?
Yes, Stephanie and Orion's relationship is so beautiful! Stephanie also has beautiful relationships with many dogs!! I was struck by that line, as well!
This was a fabulous interview Jane! Thank you so much for introducing me to Stephanie Land. I will be subscribing and looking forward to reading her work. Cheers!
Oh, and Stephanie, you are the first person I've heard say "I'll be gone in the dark" is one of their favorite reads. I just said the same thing the other day to a friend. It's a fabulous book.
Love this because. you know, raw honesty and transparency. Just the best, always. Plus I like Carhartts, jeans and kids, including adult kids who like to play.
