On talking to trees, narrative transmogrify, releasing old stories from our bodies, standing in community, art as resistance, and joy in the tiniest moments.
Lidia Yuknavitch just lifted my face from the lake I've been lost in so I can breathe again! Trauma survivors are indeed built for these times, we're armed to the teeth we then sink into our art and somehow live to tell. What a way to start my day! With you two beautiful, brilliant souls!
Oh, Lorian, I'm so happy to hear this! Not the trauma part -- but the lifting your face from the lake. How beautifully put! I'm glad this resonated with you. ❤️
I've shared this with my forest therapy guide community! The ability to open ourselves up to the questions that really matter when it comes to the more-then-human world and our connection to nature is a gift!
Ah, I loved this interview. The questions drew out such wonderful aspects of this journey we’re all on—a timeless, interconnected, physical and spiritual one. I admire Lidia’s writing so much and feel so connected to it. Thank you for sharing this really meaningful dialogue.
I was just rereading sections of The Chronology of Water last night! I use Lidia’s work as a comp in my query letters for my book-just starting to send them out and this feels like such synchronicity.
thank you for making this interview available. It is till haunting me in a good way. Finally at the grand old age of 57 finding out about various undiagnosed syndromes, physical yet all confirming a link to neurodiversity.
So much more makes sense -hindsight - so beautiful for me to hear this amazing voice. Misfit? well it is normal for me so is anyone a misfit?
Beautiful interview as always. Hope, joy and make art in the face of fuck - so much inspiration to take away from this. Thank you for this generous share Jane!
Jane, I tried to get into the Chat but it kept throwing a "We could not find the parent post" at me. Just an FYI. I'll check back there in a bit...
While I'm here, though, I'll say this: I recently devoured Reading the Waves and in the best way it made me feel like I was diving underwater, moving into an alternate element-space that is expansive and deep and resonant, where meanings are floating around to be observed and grasped if it serves, and where everything feels (literally feels in my body) connected. I approach this state in my own work, but there is a part of me that shies away from doing it because I want to swim away into it. To climb back out in order to go to work and the grocery store, to pay bills and talk on the telephone, is so disorienting, it's almost painful. How do you manage this dipping in and out, Lidia? Is it like that for you?
Thanks for letting me know, Asha!! I just fixed it! Phew! Go ahead and post your question there now! I know Lidia is looking forward to the Chat! And I'm really curious to hear her answer!
And I'm so glad you enjoyed the interview!! And Lidia's book. I agree, dang, so beautiful.
Thank you so much for this! I've just finished Reading the Waves, and Lidia makes me feel very, very brave about delving into my own work. And I am going to order that t-shirt!
Oh, that's the best feeling, Lisa!! I'm so glad! And I'm really glad you enjoyed the interview. I LOVE my t-shirt. In addition to the slogan, it's really soft cotton!
This is wonderful, thank you Jane and Lydia. I've had some marvelous conversations with other-than-humans, and you're right -- being with a tree or a mountain stream or a patch of moss is far less stressful than being with (most) other humans. They don't judge, they just are. They say the most simple, profound things.
Jane, the interview was really interesting, so great to hear from an artist about their creative process, relationship to the world in an unfiltered genuine way. I found so many nuggets of relatability and right now that is priceless and inspiring and needed. It can feel selfish to create art, this reminds me of how important it is, how it is bigger than self. Thanks so much for sharing!
What an amazing person and this who you get to hang with? Lidia Yuknavitch fits in my community of astoundingly brilliant, extremely curious, and enormously imaginative professionals and communicators. Thank you for pulling the curtain to see her interview on your platform.
Hah! I love that, Georgia! I wish I got to hang with Lidia...we're on opposite sides of the country! Your community sounds fantastic! I'm so glad you enjoyed the interview!
I loved reading this conversation. It’s leading me down many rabbit holes and pathways some terrifying and some exhilarating! Thank you for such depth of honesty.
Reading this interview, I kept thinking how much my daughter, also Lydia, would have loved Lidia's writing. I now want to read everything she's ever written. Thank you.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Eileen! I've read everything Lidia has written more than once. It's all wonderful in very different ways! It sounds like your Lydia is no longer with you and I'm so sorry for that. I'm glad Lidia's words resonated. ❤️
