Jane and Nancy, thanks for this great interview. Nancy, your desire to stay interested in the world, learning and evolving and connecting with people is wonderful. To me it's the gold standard of wishes and dreams, if there ever was such a thing, because it's simply the most important thing! I love that that is your hope for yourself!
I loved this conversation, Nancy. I really connected with your answer on getting Taplin, and how he changed the way you experience your neighbourhood Nancy. I wasn't a "cat person" until I met my partner's cats, and they've brought such richness and love to my life. It feels strange to say but I actually think having a pet is strangely under-rated!
Jane, thank you for this interview. I am a big fan of Nancy, who is so supportive of writers and generous in her own publication, especially highlighting writers who are also caregivers, as I myself was during the time I cared for my mom through her dementia and struggled to find time to write. Nancy, how fun to get to know you better here, your family, your sweet dog. This really spoke to me: "But my biggest dream is to stay interested in the world, to keep learning and evolving and meeting new people. Particularly as I watch people I love begin to age, that seems like the key to a happy and meaningful life: continuing to believe the world is interesting, and working to be part of it." I love and share that philosophy. I find the world endlessly fascinating and full of delights, big and small, even in the darkest times, and that is what keeps me young. You also made me pull my copy of Annie Dillard's The Writing Life off my shelf and reread it.
