As someone who spends too much time in my head, this is a necessary reminder to get up & move my body. Thanks, as always, for your wisdom!

Aw, thanks, Jillian. I'm an in-my-head-er as well! These reminders are so helpful!! And, in this case, beautiful!

I've been thinking about this quote by Pina Bausch a lot:

"Dance, dance, otherwise we are lost."

That's beautiful!

Yes! Is there a dance category for Substack? I found this by accident but would love to share dance content with others who write it!

Oh! That's a wonderful question! I'm not sure. Perhaps post a query in Notes? Or Office Hours? I'd love to know about those Substacks, too!

Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece - it sent me straight back to my university days, when I was a dance and choreography major (and when, incidentally, I travelled from South Africa to Michigan to perform a physical theatre piece). It was half a lifetime ago, and I haven't danced in this way since then. Thank you for reminding my body how much I loved that time, those movements, that freedom.

Oh, I love your story! How wonderful! I'm so glad this piece offered such a beautiful reminder. Maybe it will inspire you to dance again?? I know it's had me dancing around my house quite a few times...though that's not the same as your intense training! Do you remember where in Michigan you performed?

I don't remember Jane – it was back in early 1998 :) We were based a few weeks in Ann Arbor, and performed once or twice in Detroit, too. My Detroit highlight wasn't performing though - it was getting to meet Aretha Franklin (so briefly!) after we caught a snippet of her concert :)

Wow! What a highlight that was!

as a kid, I danced everywhere, in my room, in my yard, dance class-just being in the studio was my escape from a not so great childhood .I dreamed of dance, I wasn't good enough to go pro but loved every minute.. Later in the 60s-70s, I went anywhere i could lose myself in the music. Eventually I turned to my Art, I love to paint too, became a professor of Art, now retired.-- I still paint, write, listen and watch. I feel the impulse but the old body is cranky and uncooperative. Still I listen and move in a chair or tap my feet or just close my eyes and dance in my head. Thank you for this absolutely beautiful 4 minutes!

At 78 I teach line dancing to seniors in my community. We rumba, cha cha, waltz, and mambo to Latin soul, country, and rock 'n roll. Their faces light up when "Elvira" starts to play. It really is the kind of magic felt in this beautiful film. Thank you.
