On contemplation, the impact of depression on writing, beautiful segues, writing honestly about ourselves, ghostwriting, raising a child as an author, and the magic of timed writing.
Great interview!! I had not heard of this writer and now I’m incredibly intrigued. Thank you for sharing this. (Also, am I the only reader positively DROOLING over her BOOKSHELVES???!!??!!?!! 🩷🩷🩷🩷 📚)
Terrific interview with one very smart cookie . Nana-Ama -you are an inspiration, and I can’t wait to read memoir and other works. And yes…I am also experiencing major Bookshelf Envy ! Anyone who lives surrounded by books floor to ceiling - is one of my peeps.
So glad you enjoyed it, Heather!! Bookshelf Envy is real!! And, yes, anyone with that many books (and I believe I'm correct in stating that Nana-Ama has read them all!!) is what my mom would have called "a good egg!"
I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Elle! Nana-Ama is an astoundingly gifted writer. And I knooooooow!!! I've drooled over those bookshelves for years and years!! 🌸
I’m part of a Zoom timed writing group with prompts. We like 12 minutes. For some of us it’s an essential part of our mental health regimen. Some use it to work on bigger pieces. I have been using prompts from BEYOND.
Oh my gosh, that makes me so so happy that you're using the prompts!! I was thinking of starting a chat where we'd do the prompts together, one a week sort of thing. Would that interest you? (No worries if it doesn't!). And what a wonderful Zoom group. I can easily imagine that helping with mental health!
What an inspiring interview! And thank you for the reminder that contemplation is part of the writing work. It’s still an engagement that we forget (I do!). Next time I do a painting job I’ll think of that. And another great reminder for me is that “my path is my path”. Our life experiences that may have stood in the way of our writing time, have also made us the people and the writers that we are.
Nana-Ama, I love so much about this interview. The way you describe your relationship with your daughter and the work you've both done to have it be what it is feels rich and alive and honest. Actually, that's how I would describe the feel of this whole interview. "Fight for the life of your work." I'll keep that with me, that and the value of knowing why every word is where it is. Looking forward to reading your work.

No! I had the same exact thought!

This was wonderful. Thank you so much. I love “fight for the life of your work.” And the reminder of how magical a timed freewrite can be.
So happy you enjoyed it, Julie! I also loved that adage! So true. And, yes, I need to revisit a timed freewrite! They can be amazing!
